Entlebucher Mountain Dogs are known for their confidence, intelligence, loyalty, and affectionate nature. They form strong bonds with their families and are known to be particularly gentle and patient with children. Their playful and energetic personalities make them excellent companions for active individuals or families who enjoy outdoor activities. They can be protective and territorial, so early socialization and training are essential.
Entlebuchers Mountain Dogs are known for their distinctive tricolor short (black with white and tan markings) coat, which adds to their charming appearance. They are muscular and agile, with a strong, medium-sized build. The males stand 17.5-20.5 inches tall and weigh 50-65 pounds, while females are slightly smaller at 16.5-19.5 inches tall and 40-55 pounds.
Entlebucher Mountain Dogs are a delightful breed for those who can provide them with the physical and mental stimulation they need. These dogs are highly intelligent and learn quickly, which makes training relatively easy. They respond best to positive reinforcement methods and enjoy having a job to do. Their loving nature, combined with their intelligence and athleticism, makes them truly special companions.
Potential owners should be aware that Entles have high exercise needs and thrive when given tasks or jobs to do. Entlebuchers can be good with children. Their herding instincts may lead them to try and "herd" small children or other animals, which requires proper training and socialization. Entlebuchers are not right for every family. Please carefully research the breed before considering one for your family.
Entlebuchers have a short, dense, shiny double coat requiring minimal grooming. Entles don't need frequent baths. Bathe them only when they are visibly dirty or you detect an odor. Like many dogs, they shed, and regular brushing can help manage this, especially during seasonal shedding periods. They require consistent care such as regular nail trims, dental brushing, and ear cleaning to stay healthy and happy.
Entles almost disappeared or became extinct in the early 1900s because of cross-breeding with other dog breeds. Entles are the smallest of the four Swiss Mountain breeds. The largest is the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, the next in size is the Bernese Mountain Dog, then the Appenzellar. The Entles and the Appenzeller were bred to herd cattle, and the Greater Swiss and Bernese were bred to guard the herds.
